The ultimate aim of any email sender is to deliver emails to the right recipient's inbox—but even when taking measures to ensure successful delivery, bounces still occur. These bounces, if not handled well, can negatively impact your deliverability. Before we learn how, let's go over the basics.
What is a bounce?
When an email is delivered to a recipient's server, they can either accept it or reject it. When the email is rejected and sent back to the sender's server, it's called a bounce. Bounces are classified as either soft or hard bounces. Soft bounces are caused by temporary reasons, and hard bounces are caused by permanent reasons.
How does bounce affect deliverability?
Bounces are a negative outcome, and recipient servers try to avoid them. If your emails repeatedly cause bounces, it's likely that recipient servers will blacklist your domain. One provider blacklisting you sends an indirect message to other providers that your domain or sender credentials can't be trusted. This creates a cascading effect that ends with your emails having poor deliverability.
To protect your sender reputation and ensure that your important transactional emails land in the recipient's inbox on time, it's important to handle and process bounces well. The first step toward combating bounces is to arm yourself with as much information as possible.

See the number of bounces each issue has triggered and their percentage of the total bounce count for the selected period.
View a graph of the bounce count distribution over sub-categories under each cause.
Use the "View emails" option to search across ZeptoMail and list all the bounced emails that fall under each category.
Find out more about the bounce category from a short description and navigate to the relevant help page for detailed information.
Bounces by domains and Mail Agents
View a graph of the bounce count distribution across different domains or Mail Agents to find out which contributed most to the bounce rate. You can view the bounce percentage each has contributed over the chosen timeframe. This way, you can focus your corrective measures on the at-risk domains or Mail Agents.
